Travis Johnson, Director of Legislative Affairs and Policy, International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition, spoke on panel one about what industry is doing to fight counterfeiting.
He said that the borders are not the only places to look for counterfeit medicines and that law enforcement has to ask "how are people finding the fake drugs?"
He says that counterfeit medicines are often found online, through online advertising and websites.
Congress's new focus on legislation to protect IP should help fight counterfeiters. While people used to use the internet to share music illegally, now most online websites are "in it to make money" by selling counterfeit medicines online, said Johnson.
Johnson says that consumers need to know about VIPPS and legitimate programs to assist with obtain legitimate medicines at reduced costs, and be reminded that there is a difference between a cheap price and a bargain.
