NAFDAC Officals Attacked After Counterfeit Drug Raid
A number of officials from Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) narrowly escaped death at the hands of a mob of youths after seizing some counterfeit drugs in the Ebonyi State.
An eyewitness told the Daily Sun of the incident and alleged that patent medicine dealers had bribed the young people to attack the NAFDAC officials.
“I am suspecting that the fake drug dealers must have paid the irate youths handsomely that motivated them to unleash such terror on the NAFDAC officials because the way everything happened showed that there was a clear case of conspiracy between the youths and drug dealers,” the source told the news provider.
Dr. Paul Orhii, the director-general of NAFDAC, said that the incident was unfortunate and that his agency is working with security enforcement officials to ensure the safety of NAFDAC agents going forward.
Orhii also said that it is important for Nigerians in rural areas to continue to report counterfeit drugs so that NAFDAC can handle them.
