The Indian Criminal Investigation Department has arrested owners of five pharmacies charged with commerce in spurious pain relievers.
The owners of five pharmacies in Chennai, Ravi Sekhar (38) of Manjula Pharma, Perumal Samy (36) of Samy Pharmaceuticals, Sathya Nathan (35) of Sathya Pharmacy, T Kanagaraj (30) of Angel Medicals and R Nagarajan (38) of Anu Medicals, are accused of purchasing fake analgesic s tablets from unlicensed drug manufacturer in the city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh state, reports The Times of India.
The Criminal Bureau investigation began in 2010 when the directorate of drugs control found 300 strips of fake analgesics sold in a medical shop in Maduravayol, identified as spurious by laboratory testing.
The fake drug wholesaler is still at large.
“A person named Suresh in Andhra Pradesh had supplied the fake drugs from Vijayawada. We are yet to track him down,” said Superintendent of Police for the Criminal Bureau – Criminal Investigations Department P Chandraboss.
