PSM2012 – Sally Greenberg, Executive Director of the National Consumers League
Sally Greenberg, the Executive Director of the National Consumers League, spoke on consumer concerns with counterfeit medications.
She reviewed cases of counterfeit medicines that had damaged patients' health and spoke of their outrage and incredulity. She also discussed the fact that doctors can't identify fakes from real medication by looking at them, and that patients are dependent upon pharmacists to provide them authentic medication. Educating consumers about the risks of taking medication made in unsanitary conditions and without active ingredient is one of NCL's goals.
NCL has a long history of working on behalf of consumers, including fraud issues. They have an area specifically devoted to counterfeit drug fraud. They also recommend that patients look for the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice site, and tell them to be wary of sites that don't have contact information or "too-good-to-be-true" prices.
"Also, be aware of the packaging, medicine shape and taste of the authentic medication when getting refills and when in doubt talk to your pharmacist and doctor if you're concerned. And don't respond to emails suggesting you purchased medications on the internet," said Greenberg.
