Here’s how to save money without endangering your safety.

Comparison shopping pharmacies

You can save money by comparison shopping between different pharmacies right in your neighborhood. You might be shocked to find out that the price difference of a single year’s supply of medication can vary by thousands of dollars. Use legitimate pharmacy comparison sites and apps from LowestMed.com, WeRx.org and GoodRx.com to save.

Patient assistance programs

Needymeds

Pparx

Many pharmaceutical companies offer qualifying patients access to low-cost or free medications. Patients can go directly to a manufacturer web site, or both NeedyMeds.org and the Medicine Assistance Tool provide information and applications for a variety of different manufacturer patient assistance programs. Residents of Virginia that are patients at free clinics and community health centers may be able to receive assistance completing applica-tions using the Virginia Health Care Foundation’s TPC software or, if the clinic has a licensed pharmacy, receive immediate access to a formulary of free medications thanks to Rx Partnership.

Comparison shopping online from US-licensed pharmacy

VIPPS

Great cost savings can be found by comparison shopping US-licensed online pharmacies. The key is to make sure they are actually licensed US pharmacies by looking for the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites (VIPPS) seal or going to www.vipps.info. Purchasing from non-US pharmacies is a risk you shouldn’t take — especially when it comes to your medications.

Carefully shop for over-the counter medications & herbal products

Usp logo
Reputable sellers are still important even when the medication is a “natural product” or something you can easily pick up over-the-counter, without a prescription. Be sure to look for USP Verified Products at your local pharmacy. Although the USP seal doesn’t ensure the product will work, it does ensure that what is on the label is actually in the bottle. When you see the USP seal it also ensures that the product was made under good manufacturing practices and does not contain a harmful level toxins or contaminants. Remember however, that even over-the-counter and herbal products can cause interactions with prescription drugs. Be sure to tell you doctor and pharmacist about all products you are taking.
